Fishing

Blachford Lake Lodge has been a haven for great catch and release fishing for 25 years. Blachford Lake is many miles away from the every day, offering lake trout, northern pike, walleye (pickerel) and whitefish. As the only lodge on 17 km long Blachford Lake, we offer an ideal setting for a relaxed northern fishing experience. And in this relatively untouched lake there are plenty of fish! A short walk away, Magrum and Grace Lake offer fine pickerel fishing.

Win a return weekend fishing trip! Our Trophy Fish Release Contest is a popular feature dating back to 1981. Each summer, one guest catching and releasing the largest lake trout and one with the largest northern pike each win a return trip to Blachford for one person. In the recent past, winning entries have included a 38 lb. lake trout and a 28 lb. northern pike!

We have always actively encouraged a “barbless”, "hug & release" program. However, each boat of anglers can keep two or three small fish for our traditional shore lunch or bring them back to the Lodge for dinner!

Shore Lunch Island

Our shore lunch is a Blachford tradition. Delicious food from our kitchen is set up buffet style at our screened island shelter. Lunch includes all the fish fresh from the lake you can eat, pan fried over an open fire, with salads, fresh vegetables, soup on cooler days, home made bread and cookies, juice, soda, and something from the bar to whet your whistle. This is one of our favourite summer activities!

Included in your fishing package is full use of the open motorboats with environment friendly four-stroke engines. Fish on your own, or with an experienced Blachford guide. Please remember to confirm your need for guides at the time of booking.

Don’t have your own fishing gear? Rod and reels are available to rent, and lures, tackle, lure kits, and ciscoes can be purchased at the lodge. Fishing licenses can be purchased at the Lodge or in Yellowknife before you arrive.

Conservation

Blachford Lake Lodge is committed to maintaining a healthy stock of fish, and we have implemented a fish management program that includes:

  • Use of barbless hooks (it's the law) and fish gloves.
  • Catch and release - With the exception of keeping a small fish or two for shore lunch and dinner, all other fish are to be carefully released.
  • Caught fish may not be taken from the Lodge to Yellowknife.
